As you may be aware of, China central government has recently changed their policy direction on COVID-19. Pandemic outbreaks are seen nationwide in the past week and the number of cases continued to surge.

Starting this Monday, December 19 we’ve received a number of updates every day from factories that they’re quickly losing production capacity due to more and more workers tested positive.  Some are waiting for raw materials that can’t be delivered as transportation companies are lack of drivers; others have goods ready but no means to send to wharf; the situation is rather chaotic to say the least.

To make our tasks more challenging, we’ve received notices that ocean liners will reduce their sailings starting third week January.

We’d like to ensure you we’re doing our best to manage through this complicated scene and try shipping as much as we possibly can before the Chinese New Year holiday.

During this special period of turbulent economic changes unseen previously, cost increases have been reported almost on a daily basis. As much as we tried fencing off the thought, the need to increase our prices cannot be ignored any longer. Starting December 1, 2022, there will be a 4% price increase on most products / items. This is the best we could manage after careful studies of all influencing factors.

At HTL we do not just follow the trade trend or follow what the other vendors and suppliers are doing re increases. In reality since 2020 we have had the following increases: 2% in April 2021, a further 4% in February 2022, and now 4% at the end of 2022, so this is a total of 10% in 3 years. I believe you can easily note the careful consideration we take in giving such increases etc.

We also took a careful consideration to hold this off as long as possible, through which time when sea freight rates for everyone were at record high. It is good to see the freight prices resuming to nearly normal level now, which also helps us all.

New prices will effectively be implemented to orders received starting December 1. All orders received before then will be granted the current price level. Once again we sincerely thank you for your continued support and kind understanding of the current situation.

January 22, 2023 will be the start of Chinese lunar year of the Rabbit. It’s time to prepare for pre-CNY holiday orders and shipments again.

The cross-border transportation between mainland China and Hong Kong has been very much restricted for the past few months, with a limited number of trucks allowed on a daily basis. We do hope things will improve with Chinese government policies become more relax towards year-end but at the moment have not heard any news yet.

This year we plan to set the cut-off dates as follows:

• • October 21, 2022 – the latest we expect to receive your stock order for shipment in early January. 
• • October 28, 2022 – the latest we expect to receive your order confirmation by return so we can start production processes no later than October 31, 2022.

As cross-border freight situation is uncertain, the longer lead-time given to us the better chance for us to ensure full shipment before CNY holiday. Hence we encourage you to plan and send us your stock needs as soon as possible.  Thank you for your support as always.

In efforts to continue with our Green initiatives, we hereby propose dropping the plastic strapping from export cartons of all our trading and manufacturing goods. With this we are moving to as much plastic free packaging as possible.

As you have surely heard by now, Hong Kong and the southern China area are currently experiencing a severe outbreak with new restrictive measures being put in place by the local government nearly every week now.

This also forces us to implement these respective social distancing measures, reduced staffing and limited logistics services into our operation in order to try and keep everyone safe as best we can. Local carries and trucking services only offer limited operating hours therefore greatly reducing our abilities to streamline our logistical and manufacturing procedures.

Firstly, we would like to thank you for your continued support and loyalty during these strenuous times. The past few years clearly have been tumultuous and our entire industry if not all industries have been affected in some ways throughout this pandemic. Us in the Home Sewing & Craft industry were perhaps more fortunate than other industries, but certain factors hit hard on costs and we are all confronted with changes and challenges like never before.

Global supply chain shortages combined with raw material cost increases across the board have caused severe disruptions in many industries including ours, as we are sure you have experienced over the past 12-24 months. Many product categories / raw materials have been affected, most notably, cotton (Price- 12 months ago -1790 US$ per MT, Current Price 2790 US$ per MT), nylon (Price- 12 months ago -1986 US$ per MT, Current Price 2450 US$ per MT), rubber/ synthetic rubber, various forms of plastic resin and various metals (i.e. Copper Price- 12 months ago -7840 US$ per MT, Current Price 9740 US$ per MT) with some seeing price increases close to 50%. Shipping rates continue to reach record highs making challenges for all of us even greater/ as your landed costs have increased and so have our FOB costs. (Please see the graphs above)

As HTL wants to ensure a continued supply of the same quality products you’ve become accustomed to in the years prior, we HTL face the tough task of notifying you, our valued customer, that starting Feb 7th 2022, all incoming and future orders received will be subjected to a 4% price increase, effective for all product categories. This increase helps us ensure our commitment to providing the very best products and services to you.

All orders placed before Feb 7th will be honored with the current pricing, therefore we highly encourage you to take advantage of this period, and place an order soon. Due to many uncertain factors, restrictions of travel due to COVID, unstable power supply, labour shortage, further increase of material costs, just to name a few, many Chinese factories are expecting longer than usual production lead-time after Chinese New Year holiday.  Some already gave alert and projected first shipments post-CNY to be in April.

It’s also anticipated that the ocean freight situation may not improve much in the foreseeable future.  To cope with such uncertainties while ensuring you won’t run out of stock, we strongly encourage you to plan ahead and place stock orders for post-CNY shipment before December, as soon as possible.  This may seem to be a bit exaggerating but we’re in unusual time at the moment.

In accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on the Administration of Certificates of Origin Visas, the General Administration of Customs has decided that, as of December 1, 2021, it will no longer issue GSP certificates of origin for goods exported to EU member states, the United Kingdom, Canada, Turkey, Ukraine and Liechtenstein, which no longer grant preferential treatment to China's GSP tariffs.

As a result, there will be no GSP Form A provided with shipments starting December 1 if this was previously required.  Should you still need proof of origin documents, please inform us accordingly so that we may apply for a certificate of non-preferential origin for your future shipments.

Since mid-year, there had been interruptions for power supply two to three days a week in different regions of China. Lately, as you may have heard from news or other sources, there are strict policies in some areas for stepped up power cut and rationing. Some places may go as many as 4-5 days interruptions each week. As most parts in China are going into winter months now, we anticipate the situation may worsen.

We quickly surveyed our major suppliers with concern to lead-time of pre-CNY shipments. Most of our factories have told us they’d do their best coping with the situation, either by running their own generators or other means. Since local government policy may change from time to time, it is difficult to anticipate or make promises.

Our 2022 CNY orders cut-off remains at October 18 for pre-CNY shipment. With unstable ocean freight scheduling, shipments before CNY holiday are expected to be more difficult than usual for the peak season.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will alert you where we see the need. We strongly encourage you to plan your stock needs and place orders as soon as possible, keeping in mind the production lead-time may be getting longer and costs going up as another consequence of the situation.

As much as we understand the market situation for our products during the unusual time of COVID 19, and as much as we’d like to expand our capacity, our options are very limited at the moment.  Regrettably we will have to start scheduling orders from now on to shipment in March 2021.

We will do our very best at trying to ship as much as possible of orders planned for before Chinese New Year holiday; with what cannot be ready in time, we’ll arrange shipment as soon as possible starting early March.

We expect capacity for March will be filled up quickly so if you’re planning for stock shipment during March, we strongly suggest sending the order as soon as possible.

The Koelnmesse Management Board has decided and announced overnight, the cancellation of the upcoming h+h Cologne show 2020. Here, we regret to inform that HTL Ltd. team will not be going to Germany/Europe as planned; given the health and safety measures been implemented globally (i.e. travel restrictions & screenings, quarantine issues, etc.).

Kindly note that Simon will be in Europe at the end-April or mid-June for clients and partners meetings anyways (given that circumstances allow such travels at that time).

In the meantime, to tackle our absence and inability to present our products and upcoming projects at the h+h show this year; we are looking to set-up video-conference calls starting (potentially) 13th March to 3rd April.

Hence, can you advise if you have Skype video, Zoom, or other net meeting software setup (and the relevant account names/call names)? Or would you require help for such setups? At our HTL Hong Kong office, we are well equipped with advanced and high quality devices to present and demonstrate our products clearly via digital channels. This will be set as a platform moving forward, with the aim to continue to support and offer the best of our services to customers. As updated last week, the return to work after Chinese New Year was postponed to February 10 nationwide.  In the past two days we’ve received more updates from various regions.  All factories are required to take time to prepare their work places with stringent quarantine measures, and pass inspection by their local government before getting permission to resume working.  All staff returning from places outside factory local district is required to go through a 14-day quarantine period before they’re allowed to join regular work schedule.  Factory dormitory has limited facility suitable for quarantine therefore workers can only return in batches.

Some factories say they may resume as early as next week.  It seems our production facility in Huizhou might be able to start production on February 25th at the soonest.  Nothing is confirmed though. Local Government situation and the understand of official policy is always evolving.

We were expecting the return of over 150 workers on February 3 originally.  If we’re able to resume by February 25th, only 50 workers from local district can start working while other workers from other areas going through quarantine.  So that’s at least three to four weeks delay to our production schedule.
We’ll keep weekly update on the situation and progress.  In the meantime, should you have items / orders that are absolutely urgently required, please bring to our attention the specific article numbers within these orders and we’ll try our best finding solution for soonest shipment possible.

With any new incoming orders, please expect shipment lead-time to be at least one to two weeks longer than usual but we’ll certainly do our best to minimize the delay.

By now everyone is aware China has been battling the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus in the past few weeks. As an effort to slow down / reduce the chances of spreading the virus on February 3rd immediately after CNY holiday China government announced all schools and companies cannot resume working before February 10th.  There may be further extension to this ruling as some speculates.

Most of Chinese factory workers are not local residents; they travel various distances in search of better employment opportunities.  A lot of workers have fear to travel and staying home becomes an obvious choice as anyone would understand.

At the moment it is difficult for us to gauge how the current situation will affect our production and shipment schedule.  Delay of two weeks is within our expectation. We’ll closely monitor all our factories upon their return next week, if they will return.  And we’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

We’re pleased to introduce our new hot-iron transfer pen, available in both Hemline (as 298.PEN), and Sew Easy (as ER298.PEN) ranges now.  Its applications are very much the same as the traditional hot-iron transfer pencil ER298, and just as easy to use. The pen with a medium tip provides clear and easy to see blue lines on light coloured fabrics, less effort yet more efficient than the pencil.

We’ve phased out the pencil so please order the pen instead in your next stock order.

We HTL have recently launched a new comprehensive ERP system. Though we’ve tried to keep all documents in the same format as before, there are slight differences you’ll notice. One difference which is relatively significant is shipment invoices.

With the new ERP system our operations are now carried out in multiple “sites” to cater our multiple production lines.  As a bi-product of this, shipment packing is done by individual sites hence they’re invoiced separately. So although for each of your orders, we’re grouping stock from different production lines into one shipment to you, we’re unable to invoice them all together at this time/ for a while.  We’re amending the program logic to allow us to issue one invoice for one order as before, but this will take some time to achieve.

In the meantime we understand such multiple invoices for one order per shipment could be confusing and troublesome for your shipment receipts.  As a temporary solution, we’ll group the multiple invoices per order into one with a reference number assigned, so that you’ll receive and deal with one document per order basis.  We expect this will be in effective for the next three to four months and we appreciate your patience and kind understanding of this.

N4365 Fabric Sewing Kit will be revamped and presented in a smaller size paper counter display. The original display dimensions is in W34 x D14 x H16cm. The new compact version is downsized to W22 x D16 x H10cm. The smaller footprint will not only occupying less retail space but also minimising transportation and warehousing cost.  Furthermore, we have cancelled the individual plastic polybag per kit so the packaging will be more environmentally friendly.

SewAid is a program which teachers selected women in very poor countries how to sew, and also provide them with the machines, equipment and skills they need to start a small home business in dressmaking or alterations and repair.  Additionally in some countries such as Uganda, Cambodia, Philippines and Fiji, SewAid has established permanent sewing workshops where women can be taught to sew and then given employment making various garments and homewares which are then sold around the world.  SewAid  also works closely with Days for Girls International and assist in teaching Days For Girls sewing in a number of third world countries. 

The program is run by our founder Mr. Tony Castley, and closely supported by his family business Sewgroup International.  Additionally most programs are run in conjunction with Rotary International, as Tony is very involved with Rotary and has found that the Rotary connection is vital to the success of the programs in Third World countries.

Please note the upcoming Chinese New Year (Year of the Dog) will be on February 16th, 2018.  This year due to some very significant Central Government Issues in China we are double concerned re Costs and Delayed Shipment Schedules before Chinese New Year.

In the past few weeks we have been in constant contact with many of our China factories / vendors who are reporting to us many concerns and updates of the Central Government pressures re more ethical manufacturing which is directly related mainly to the global environmental targets China has committed to achieve. This pressure is closing many small factories down (temporarily or permanently), plus relocating many and the effect is being felt through the entire length of the supply chain... and so it is being widely predicted that raw material shortage will be a factor to increased prices on top of the easy to predict much longer production lead times. The situation seems very serious and so it is needed that we advise all clients of this now.

We are expecting factories to take their holidays for the Chinese New Year from late January to mid-March 2018.

So the last shipments before CNY will be sent on week of January 29th / early February and the first shipments after CNY will start mid to late March.   

For any stock orders you would like us to ship before this holiday period, we’d like to suggest you sending to us by week October 9th. Please ensure order confirmation is submitted to us by or before October 20th.

We consider it important to urgently advise all customers that over the last sixty or so days we have been advised and have clearly noted in our own factory plus many of our other Chinese vendors how the raw materials in some many key areas are now rising like 20-30 % &  even for example HK carton supplier rises crazy twice within one month to 53%. This is real and significant issue that will have a follow effects on a lot products being produced in China, including a lot of the HTL products.

Key areas are plastic raw materials, all printing cards, carton boxes, and all packaging materials.

Currently we are working very hard on dealing with the best way possible but it is our responsibility to advise our clients now that after Chinese New Year to expect some very key price adjustments. We simply have no choice when the market is currently jumping up costs like this.
